Why does the government want 15 year olds to get parental approval before commenting online?

That’s the curious implication of this moderation policy, which states:

If you are aged 16 or under, please get your parent/guardian’s permission before submitting a comment. Users without this consent are not allowed to participate or provide us with personal information.

A very curious policy, but perhaps there’s a good reason for it that I’ve missed. Any suggestions?

    Last time I looked it was 13 or something wasn’t it? I don’t mean the government but some general Internet “protection” thing.

  3. Possibly it’s just self-protection – any perceived mishandling of children’s data could be a PR disaster for one thing.
