It’s obvious. It’s true. And it’s usually ignored.

The majority of the electorate is female.

So stories about how ‘party X is targeting the female vote’ or ‘women could decide the result in marginal seat Y’ are really just ways of dressing up the banal obvious statement that ‘the majority of the electorate matters’.

Except for one thing they do reveal: how the focus on British politics is still male dominated.

Targeting the female vote, separate chapters on the women’s vote, special features on women’s policy – the way these are written is all quite bizarre when you remember that in each case it’s about the majority of the electorate being written about. The majority only needs the special focus because the rest of the time its treated otherwise.
