A lesson from 1983 for the Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats, and before that the Alliance, has repeated suffered from the problem of having a much smaller core vote than the other parties, meaning the party has to work even harder just to stand still, as this extract from Britain at the Polls 1983, edited by Austin Ranney, shows:

Hence the importance of the Liberal Democrats finally shaking off this problem of too small a core vote.
