Excellent Lib Dem win in Southwark

Congratulations to Dan Whitehead and the team for such a strong defence of the Lib Dem seat in Surrey Docks ward, Southwark:

At the start of his campaign, Dan said:

I will be fighting this campaign on the issues that residents tell us are their top three priorities locally: more buses, a new bridge and faster broadband.

Many residents are also deeply worried about the Labour council’s regeneration plans for Canada Water and how they are in the pockets of their developer friends.

Until we tackle the basics, such as transport congestion and broadband, the Labour council must stand up to developers and not just roll over to heir grand schemes.

Elsewhere, there were three other by-elections yesterday, two without a Lib Dem candidate and the third with a fall in the Lib Dem vote – reinforcing the message from May about how patchy Liberal Democrat performance is at the moment and the dangers of Premature Stakhanovite Optimism.

If you would like to receive by-election results by email in future, sign up for my daily digest of posts as they also include a full set of by-election results each week (with more detail than appears on this site).
