What web browser should I use?

21 July 2009 + 0 , ,

Google Chrome is, for a variety of reasons, my preferred web browser. However, I often need a second web browser running (e.g. to test what a site whose CMS I am logged in to looks like for someone not logged in).

It should therefore be fast, light on memory and render pages in a fairly standard way. I’ve been struggling with Firefox but even with its latest version it still hogs large amounts of memory. Internet Explorer often performs better on the memory front, but doesn’t really count as fast and light on memory either.

So suggestions: which web browser should become my preferred choice? Is there a web browser of my dreams out there?

Short answer, no there’s not. I run Firefox, Chrome, IE7, Safari for PC, Opera and Flock, with IE6 on a spare laptop next to me for occasional testing. Generally I go with Firefox for the extensions, with either Opera or (more usually) Safari when I need two instances of the same site with different logins active. Chrome’s good, but somehow doesn’t do it for me. Might be worth trying Safari, see how you go with it.

Plus point of Safari would be stopping the iTunes software updated prompting me all the time to install it :-)

I think you will quite like the new Safari 4.0. On Windows PC, you definitely need to alter the > preference > appearance > font smoothing to ‘best for flat panel displays’ or whichever. For web developers also > preferences > advanced > ‘show develop menu in menu bar’ is useful (and obviously show menu bar).

I like the easy bookmarks and tabs and the way it seems to be understated and in the background rather than in your face.

Not too bothered about ‘Top Sites’ but I love the history in cover flow – my top feature!

Thanks for that configuration tip John.

You might be interested in trying out Opera. The new beta of Opera 10 has all of the skin changes by Jon Hicks. Definitely better now and even has visual thumbnails for your open tabs.
