Major investment in Post Offices announced

The BBC reports of a topic long dear to Lib Dem hearts:

More than 6,000 branches of the Post Office are to be revamped by the government in the next three years.

An investment programme costing £1.34bn will modernise the sub-branches…

The government repeated its pledge that there would be no further closures of post office branches…

The postal affairs minister, Norman Lamb, said: “This government has made a commitment that there will be no closure programme and invested £1.34bn to secure the long term future of the Post Office.

“However, change is needed to secure the long term future of post offices; the pilots are showing the new ‘locals’ and ‘mains’ models are popular with consumers and sub-postmasters.”…

George Thomson, general secretary of the National Federation of Sub-postmasters, said: “This investment will bring significant benefits to customers, communities and local businesses right across the UK.”

Alongside the mutualisation of Post Offices, this is an important part of what the Liberal Democrats are achieving in government.

    • The heavy closures under the last government have stopped. (7,000 by the Labour government before May 2010, none since then). I fear though that not many of those closures can now be undone, but stopping further closures and improving the survivors would still be a welcome outcome.
