Vince Cable has accused the Conservatives of lying to the public with the claim that a future Tory government could deliver an overall budget surplus without raising taxes in the next parliament.

In his key speech to the Liberal Democrat conference, the Business Secretary took particular aim at Chancellor George Osborne, calling him “ideologically obsessed by cuts”.

He said Mr Osborne was dishonest to suggest that he could eliminate the structural budget deficit by 2017-18 and then run an overall budget surplus without raising taxes. [PoliticsHome]
