Labour council leader condemns “abhorrent” immigration leaflet by Labour shadow minister

The Birmingham Post reports:

The Labour leader of one of Britain’s most multicultural cities has slammed a leaflet published by a Labour shadow minister for “abhorrent” comments about immigration.

Sir Albert Bore, leader of Birmingham City Council, the largest local authority in the country, attacked an election leaflet distributed by Shadow Business Minister Liam Byrne, who is defending his seat of Birmingham Hodge Hill.

And Sir Albert said there should be an apology for the comments in Mr Byrne’s leaflet – which included a warning that immigrants would have to “earn their right to stay” in the UK by learning English and obeying British laws.

Liam Byrne has quite a record of controversy, though often on more minor matters.

UPDATE: But also on very serious matters too, with his suspension from Parliament over bullying.
