Political

A lovely letter from Charles Kennedy

Many years ago when Charles Kennedy was leader and I was working at Lib Dem HQ, we had an IT contractor working in the building who didn’t know much about politics but was always keen to get on with everyone and interested in learning more about politics.

One day he was in the lift chatting with a stranger, to him, and asked “Oh, what is it you do here?” The modest, slightly baffled replied came, “Well, I guess I run the place” and out of the lift came the contractor, not embarrassed or feeling belittled, but charmed.

That was the secret of Charles Kennedy’s success and that’s why this letter about a muppet captures much more about his political life than a long policy document or detailed chronology.
