The one good thing about the Chilcot Report delays…

… is that it may help kill off the instinct all too common in politics (including the Liberal Democrats) to see setting up a committee to review something as the way to fix a problem.

Royal Commissions have gone rather out of fashion, but seeking answers to challenges via the creation of committees of other forms is still very popular, not only with those wishing to delay issues but also with those genuinely seeking solutions.

Chilcot is a good reminder of how often that latter group mismatch aims and methods in ways that fail.
