Nick Clegg joins Social Mobility Foundation

The Social Mobility Foundation reports a new role for Nick Clegg, a long-time advocate of action to improve social mobility:

We are delighted to announce that the former Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Democrats, The Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP, has agreed to join the Board of trustees of the charity.

Nick Clegg was the leading figure in the Coalition Government’s strategy to improve social mobility. He will work with the other trustees and staff as they expand SMF to become a national charity which, by the end of 2018, will be in a position to support young people wherever they live in the UK. The SMF works with employers to give opportunities to bright but underprivileged young people in state schools to enter the best Universities and to access good career prospects in business and the professions.

Commenting on the appointment, the Chairman of Trustees, Sir Victor Blank said:

“We are honoured that Nick has agreed to join us in supporting the work of the Social Mobility Foundation. He has worked tirelessly to promote the importance of social mobility for many years. His skills and commitment to the issue will be of huge benefit to us as we seek to support thousands of young people around the country and we very much look forward to working with him.”

Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP commented:

“I am delighted to be joining the Social Mobility Foundation as a Trustee. I have long admired the pioneering work of the SMF in expanding educational and vocational opportunities for youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Real opportunity is still denied to far too many young people in Britain today. The schemes run by SMF show how that can be changed when employers, schools, Government and charities work effectively together.”
