I was going to do a piece on Margaret Beckett’s report. But then I read it.

I was all set to write a blog post about the Learning the lessons from defeat taskforce report – Margaret Beckett’s report into Labour’s 2015 general election defeat – but frankly it’s not a very good report. Hence I share it here as much as anything as an example of how not to do an electoral post-mortem – short of evidence, heavy on avoiding admitting anyone did anything wrong (read the report and you’ll struggle to find much of a suggestion that Ed Miliband was not the most talented Labour leader ever), and so on.

For learning the lessons, take a look instead at the excellent Why the Tories won and the importance of valence politics.

For some thoughts on the Liberal Democrats see my posts on where the Liberal Democrat polling went wrong, the myth of short-term factors and the 10 things which the Lib Dems actually got right in amongst the carnage.
