There are already plenty of individual good news stories for the Lib Dems from the election results, including Mark Hunter making it another ex-MP who has returned as a councillor with a stonking majority, Alex Cole-Hamilton winning in Edinburgh Western (one of the ‘seats to watch’ from Liberal Democrat Newswire #74) and a remarkably strong council hold in Eastleigh.

Fantastic to see @agcolehamilton elected to Holyrood after 9 years and 3 elections. He will be an amazing MSP.

Eastleigh summary. Lib Dems win all 13 seats in Eastleigh constituency. New council 38 Lib Dem 6 Con. No gains or losses. Tory MP looks sick

There’s even the unusual sight of the council seat gains/losses at time of writing putting Lib Dems at +8 seats, a net gain and better than both the Tories (+5) and Labour (-24).
But underneath the welter of positive tweets from Lib Dems so far, what’s the real story? How widespread has the Lib Dem recovery been? And how far has the party actually recovered this year? How widespread have setbacks being such as losing control in Stockport last night?
Find out the answers to all these in the next edition of my monthly email newsletter, Liberal Democrat Newswire, being put together this weekend.
