Ade Adeyemo selected to fight the former Lib Dem seat of Solihull

Ade Adeyemo

Councillor Ade Adeyemo has been selected as the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Solihull Constituency, formerly held by Lorely Burt (2005-15).

Councillor Adeyemo said:

Being selected as the Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Solihull is a massive challenge which I am pleased to accept. It is absolutely essential that we speak up, on behalf of local people, about unfair Tory policies – ensuring that we subject our MP’s voting record (in parliament) to the scrutiny it deserves.

I am privileged to have had the opportunity of working closely with Baroness Lorely Burt during her tenure as MP for Solihull and I intend to carry on in her footsteps as the local champion for residents as well as businesses in the Solihull constituency.

His blurb from the May 2016 elections, when he won, gave this further background:

I have been a Solihull resident for over 18 years and I am passionate about our Borough. Solihull is a lovely place to live and work and I feel that we must work very hard to keep it that way.

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer and Risk Management Professional, working in the Insurance sector.

I used to be a keen rugby player, starting at school and moving on to University in Scotland.  After I left university, I played for Andover RFC, Maidstone RFC and Birmingham & Solihull RFC.

I am now a (retired) Rugby Football Union (RFU) Referee and Adviser with the Warwickshire Society.

In my spare time I am a keen amateur photographer and a Presenter on Radio Sandwell.  I am also actively involved in a number of local Voluntary and Community Associations.

As with Amna Ahmad‘s selection in Sutton, this is cautiously good news that the party is doing better at diversity on the BAME front this time round. The point Sunder Katwala has made well is that selecting BAME candidates only in seats with high BAME populations is unlikely to result in many becoming Lib Dem MPs given the party’s current profile of support. The party needs to select BAME candidates in all sorts of seats. His other ideas for what the party could do to improve its diversity were covered in LDN #77.
