Two of the excellent candidates for Federal Conference Committee

Following on from the Federal Board and the Federal Policy Committee, here are two great candidates to highlight from the list running for Federal Conference Committee (FCC) in the internal Liberal Democrat elections:

  • Cara Jenkinson just missed out on election last time but then got on to the FCC after two people stood down. An incredibly hard worker and certainly not short of useful experience to make our conferences bigger and better whilst also protecting and enhancing their democratic role.
  • Mary Reid – one of the party’s best online campaigners from since before even I got started, and full of good ideas for conference. A long-time campaigner for more transparency in the party and regularly involves members through organising other events too.

Apologies as ever to everyone else not included, but I think there’s a real value in brevity in such lists and the wonder of STV means you can give a high preference to many people.

What FCC does

Here is the official blurb:

The Federal Conference Committee is responsible for overseeing the effective running of Conference, including the selection of motions and amendments for debate. Members are expected to be as objective as possible in attempting to select motions and amendments which will ensure good debate. Each member of FCC is also expected to present motions in a particular policy area, including the views of the proposers and any other relevant persons. The FCC is responsible for running sessions in the Hall at Conference. Members of FCC also provide drafting advice and liaise with members submitting motions.

The Chair of FCC, in addition to the work described above, is also expected to liaise closely with Conference Office and the Chief Executive, most notably as regards the Conference budget and any other Conference-related decisions. The Chair is elected from among the directly elected members of the committee.

Vice-Chairs of FCC chair FCC’s sub-committees, the General Purposes Sub-Committee and the Conference Communications Sub-Committee, which look in detail at the Conference budget and communications to members both before and at Conference respectively. Vice Chairs are also expected to deputise for the Chair where necessary. Vice Chairs may be directly elected members of the committee or state party representatives.
