Great graphic explains the options for Britain outside the European Union

A very handy summary from the Institute for Government – and note how there’s no option which delivers the Brexiteer ‘let’s have our cake and eat it’ dreams of getting everything they’ve said they want.

  1. A very useful graphic and I wish it had been this clear during the referendum debate.

What I would say playing Devil’s Advocate is that before the Canada deal, there was no Canada column, before the Swiss deal there was no Swiss column. We do have the ability to create ourselves a column that is different to the others, but the central point that you can’t have your cake and eat it is well made.

    • Richard Jackson, what you overlook is that there is no “before the Swiss deal” because there is no “the Swiss deal”: it’s a conglomerate of treaties that have been set up over decades. And the Canada agreement took 15 years. Yes, you do have the ability to create yourselves a column that is different to the others, if the BBC lends you a TARDIS. Anything else makes it unrealistic to come to an agreement remotely comparable before the UK economy hangs itself by its own entrails.
