Great news from Cheltenham: Martin Horwood returns to frontline politics

Great news from Cheltenham. Martin Horwood, former MP for the area and a consistent supporter of the non-establishment choice in Lib Dem contests, previously announced that for personal reasons he would not be seeking to stand again at the next general election.

He has, however, now returned to the political front line by running for council:

Martin Horwood is standing in a two-member ward, currently represented by a Conservative and an independent councillor. The latter, Ian Bickerton, has stood down triggering a by-election for his seat, and he is one of Martin’s nominators for the contest to replace himself. The Conservative is also up for election this year as part of the normal cycle of elections.

  1. The ward is currently represented by a Tory and an Independent. The Tory seat is up this year and the incumbent (Chris Nelson) is running again. Bickerton’s resignation creates a double vacancy.

  2. I was very impressed by Martin Horwood when he was an MP – low-key, but very, very competent, thoughtful and sharp-minded.
