A welcome full slate of Liberal Democrat candidates this week

Four council by-elections this week, and four Liberal Democrat candidates.

Syston Ridgeway, Leicestershire County Council

Nitesh Dave was the Liberal Democrat candidate in a ward the Conservatives held:

Fremington, North Devon Council

Graham Lofthouse is the Liberal Democrat candidate, the party’s first showing in this ward since 2003. Devon has been good by-election territory for the Lib Dems and North Devon has a newly selected Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC).

North Hykeham Mill, North Kesteven Council

Corinne Byron was the Liberal Democrat candidate in a ward the party won in 2007 but not in the three contests since (and indeed had no candidate even in two of them). This time it was a Conservative hold:

Skellingthorpe, North Kesteven Council

Tony Richardson was the Liberal Democrat candidate in a ward that likes voting for independents at the moment:

These by-election results round-ups cover principal authority by-elections. See my post The danger in celebrating parish and town council wins for your own party for the reasons to avoid straying too often into covering town, parish or community council by-elections.

One response to “A welcome full slate of Liberal Democrat candidates this week”

  1. If we think that we have problems, especially with not having byelections contested by the Lib Dems, the Greens seem to be in a poor way, when it comes to local byelections.

The two North Kesteven contests did not have Green candidates standing, while in North Devon (surely normally fertile ground for the Greens), their vote plummeted from 7.8% to 1.7%, while in the Leicestershire County Council byelection, their vote fell, albeit not so drastically, from 8.5% to 7.2%.
