Lib Dems lose council by-election to Conservatives in Cornwall

Only one council by-election this week: a Liberal Democrat defence with Steven Daniell that was unsuccessful in Newquay Treviglas ward on Cornwall Council:

Three parties have now won the ward in the last four contests: Ukip in 2013, Lib Dems in 2016 and 2017 with now the Conservatives winning in 2018.

That makes two rare Lib Dem by-election loses recently, but at the same time as the party has started to hit double figures (just) regularly in the opinion polls. Two straws in the wind blowing in different directions.

These by-election results round-ups cover principal authority by-elections. See my post The danger in celebrating parish and town council wins for your own party for the reasons to avoid straying too often into covering town, parish or community council by-elections.

  1. It’s one poor result where the sitting Libdem sadly died, previously held by Tories and UKIP. Nothing to see here. Much better to look at the many excellent wins in the last 2 years!

  2. This is annoying Labour are rolling into town with no prospects of winning…… and allowing Tories a narrow win. If this happens again in a GE – the Tories will trounce Labour
