Demand Better: the Liberal Democrat plan for our country

Britain isn’t working as it should.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to work hard and build a good life for themselves, their family and their community. Everyone deserves to be paid a fair wage, to afford a home and to be able to use good public services. But for many, that’s not the reality today. People are working hard; they’re playing their part, whether that means taking care of their family, earning their degree or working to afford their rent or their mortgage – and yet too many are trapped by a lack of opportunity.

So starts the Demand Better, which sets out the Liberal Democrat plan for our country, talking about Brexit, of course, but also so much more:

A better Britain is possible.

A country in which everyone has the opportunity to make the most of their lives, where they get something back for the contributions they make to their communities. A country where everyone can live in homes in safe, clean and friendly neighbourhoods, where people can do rewarding work for a decent income and have access to high-quality health and social care, childcare, transport, education for children and adults alike. A country where people can breathe clean air, use clean energy and enjoy the beauty of the natural world. A government that keeps the country safe, that helps it prosper, that builds a society in which everyone has an equal chance.

Read on to find out how we can make this happen:

When this policy paper was passed at Liberal Democrat conference, the following was added to the motion:

[The Liberal Democrats demand] a freer society, in which surveillance and other encroachments upon civil liberties are curtailed, justice is accessible to all and focussed on rehabilitation, and the state does not criminalise people for victimless actions; in which the state does not make unjust intrusions into people’s lives to impose arbitrary lifestyle restrictions or ration service provision; and in which people can be confident that the government, law enforcement, and corporate entities alike are fully and effectively accountable for their actions towards individuals.

  1. I liked the green environment bit . This is part of the future and our credentials in this field should be trumpeted loudly CORBYN SHOULD NOT TAKE THE CREDIT. The Tories if they see it as a vote catcher will join the bandwaggon. This is an area that the young (of any age) should learn and be involved in.One thought could be that vacant buildings ie redundant pubs or closed bank buildings could be developed for community use or for clean industrial development projects. One thought is use 3d printers for product development, less wastage clean environment to stimulate town centres that need a new lease of life. Say a redundant pub could be transferred via change of use principles. We should grasp the future.
Should we not put a quarter of ALL focus leaflets to the use of stating the message and our policies?
Ps -still reading the whole thing!!

  2. This is all great, and much can be achieved at not too much cost. But much cannot, and I see very little about financing. What redistribution there is cannot provide enough for this ambitious programme. Do we not leave ourselves open to the charge of believing in magic money trees?

  3. This is a great summary of what we want to do but like Venetia I’m concerned about how we raise the money, especially as we seem to be abolishing inheritance tax. I’m concerned that that proposal will negate all the others for a lot of people.
Is this being emailed to all members?
I can’t read to the end because I’m having a lot of trouble with the website but it’s a great communication, easy to read and with facts inserted to support our approach and strengthen the argument
