Two Prospective Parliamentary candidates selected by Lib Dems in Haringey

Congratulations Dawn Barnes and Tammy Palmer, newly selected by Haringey Liberal Democrats:Haringey Lib Dem tweet about Dawn Barnes and Tammy Palmer being selected

Here is a little bit about both of this talented duo:

Dawn Barnes – Hornsey & Wood Green

Dawn Barnes has campaigned in Haringey for several years, working alongside Lynne Featherstone to save the Whittington and protect funding for Haringey schools.

She lives in Bounds Green and has worked in communications and marketing for over ten years. Her experience is diverse and she has worked in the private, public and charity sectors including for a charity working with people who misuse substances and alcohol; a local council and a sustainable design; and a project for King’s College London working to recruit students from a broad range of backgrounds.

Dawn Barnes hails from the north of England and came to London by way of France, Japan and Oxford. She was determined to live in the city from a very young age and fell in love with London on first sight. She has been a trustee of a national charity and co-manages a network of reading groups across London.

As a member of “generation rent”, Dawn understands the pressures people face to find adequate housing. Dawn will work tirelessly to get Haringey Council to build the affordable homes our area so desperately needs. Previously she ran a successful campaign to bring 400 empty homes on the North Circular back into use.

Tammy Palmer – Tottenham

Tammy Palmer has lived in Tottenham for a decade. She plays an active role in many local initiatives and has led on the Fair Funding for Education campaign in Tottenham calling for the Government to rethink their plans to change the current funding formula which will have a serious impact on many schools in Tottenham where funding is vital to ensure that young children have every chance to succeed through high-quality education.

She also plays a very active role in her local school, working with the headteacher to challenge the council on better road safety measures and environmental issues such as traffic calming and creating no idling zones. Tammy Palmer has also taken up a role as an Advisory Governor to a local school providing specialist HR advice.

As an active campaigner for Remain during the referendum, she went on to co-found two high profile Remain organisations and organise campaigns and protest events.

Tammy Palmer has dedicated her career to working in the voluntary sector as a senior HR manager, with a special interest in tackling social inequality and ensuring that young people from hard to reach communities are given the support and opportunity to start a career within the Not for Profit Sector.

Having grown up living in foster care in Northamptonshire, she was routinely told from a young age that “children like you don’t succeed”. This has only spurred her on, and made Tammy Palmer determined to challenge and change the inequality in society.
