What do you make of this pilot political podcast episode?

The As Yet Unnamed Political Podcast - Stephen Tall and Mark Pack
Welcome to the first, and possibly last, edition of a new political podcast featuring former Lib Dem Voice editor (and celebrity streaker) Stephen Tall and, er…, former Lib Dem Voice editor (and rumoured book author) Mark Pack.

Shortly before Christmas, we recorded a trial episode which, depending on what both we and you make of it, may also be the last episode or the start of something new for 2019.

I think there’s a gap in the field of excellent political podcasts for a ‘two people chatting’ format with a Liberal Democrat lean, though as you’ll hear from the trial it’s about more than just the party. It’s also fun to do something where what you say involves immediate, but polite and thoughtful, reaction from someone – a bit like how online engagement can work when it’s going really well, but which it only rarely (at least for party political discussion) manages to do so. And after writing the equivalent of more than five times the length of the Bible on this blog and in my email newsletters, I figure some regular readers may like a different format.

Anyway, let’s see…

As you’ll hear we concentrated more on exploring whether we’ve got the time, whether we find it fun and whether the technology can be simple and quick enough to be practical, rather than whether or not we’ve got a good microphone to cut out background sound.

Another Lib Dem themed podcast you may find of interest is the Frame Game, about political messaging.

UPDATE: Our second pilot episode is now out.

  1. Was there a point to recording in a bookshop? Without a system that cuts out background noise, isn’t it obvious to avoid background noise?

It was OK to listen into your chat, I stayed with it, but did wonder what its focus was supposed to be. The joke about recording it last September wore rather thin, because it seemed like tacit admission that the podcast was not so much about looking to the future, particularly the immediate future (such as the course of the next year).

  2. Fantastic! I’ve been waiting for something like this as there is most definitely a gap in the market. Political nerds already have access to Progress, Spectator Coffee House Shots, New Statesman, Times Red Box etc all doing their own podcasts. One to cover the Lib Dem side of things is sorely needed.

  3. I agree that it is time for more of a LD voice wherever it can get out. For me it will be a useful way of getting our message easily across to expats here in mainland EU. Better sound quality is a must and the September joke was lost on me (I was listening with one ear whilst seeing to the baby, as I suspect many people do… listening with one ear that is!). It will be good to hear the next one and could I request a portion on the LD view of the plight of us over here if things go really badly

  4. Really enjoyed this, good to have a lib dem podcast as there has been a serious gap in the market in recent months. I hope you make more!
