Liberal Democrat winning run in Sutton local elections continues

Only the two council by-elections this week – a Liberal Democrat defence in London and an SNP seat in Scotland.

Clackmannanshire Central, Clackmannanshire

As ever in Scotland, the council election were originally done as multi-member wards using STV, but with only one vacancy in a by-election, the voting system switches to AV. John Biggam stood for the Liberal Democrats – a particularly welcome move given that there was no Lib Dem the three previous times the ward was up.

Wallington North, Sutton

Sutton Council has a remarkably long-running record of Liberal Democrat success. Following Joyce Melican’s resignation, triggered by a stroke, Barry Lewis stood for the Liberal Democrats:

Barry has been a local scout leader in Wallington for 30 years currently running a local Cub Pack and Explorer Scout Unit. He previously volunteered with adults with severe learning disabilities at the Orchard Hill Gateway club and as an appropriate adult at Sutton Police Station.

Barry has lived on Stanley Park Road since 1989 and was born, educated and married in Sutton. Barry raised his family here and his children all attended Sutton schools.

These by-election results round-ups cover principal authority by-elections. See my post The danger in celebrating parish and town council wins for your own party for the reasons to avoid straying too often into covering town, parish or community council by-elections.
