Share your good news on Lib Dem local candidate numbers

Following my post about the impressive performance of Broxbourne Liberal Democrats when it comes to running far more candidates this May, I’ve had a pleasing range of feedback about other impressive increases in candidate numbers.

In the same part of the country as Broxbourne, we’ve seen our candidate numbers in East Herts go up from 12 in 2015 to 26 this time round (out of a possible 50), and in Hertsmere from 7 to 17 (out of 39).

I’m sure there’s plenty more good news out there. So do share your news here…

And remember to give thanks to all those volunteer agents who have to do extra work when we have more candidates.

    • Congrats – long way still to go as you say David, but more than doubling our number of candidates is a great step forward.

      • We’re recovering from a long period of decline. Our target for four years’ time is at least one per ward (ideally full slate).

  1. As I said on the original post, in Tendring we’re up from 4 to 25. But what I didn’t know then, was that there are two Tory wards where we put up a “paper” candidate – and Labour have failed to nominate anyone. One of those has also had a respectable Green vote in recent years, but no Green now. Two straight Tory – Lib Dem fights.

  2. Here in Upper Calderdale we’re fighting all 3 district seats (16 out of 17 in Calderdale as a whole) and in Todmorden, where Town Council elections are fought on political Labels we have 17 out of 18 candidates, more than Labour on 15, 3 independents and 1 green, but 0 Tories.

  3. Mark, where can we look in media to get national figures for number of seats contested by each party?

  4. I saw that in East Devon we already have two Lib Dems elected unopposed 🙂 🙂 just a few thousand to go!

  5. South Somerset DC, contesting all 35 wards with 57 candidates out of a maximum 60. Boundaries changed quite a bit since last elections in 2015: result then 29LD, 28Con, 3 Ind.

  6. New Lib Dem member and first ever time put myself forward for Council elections with Lib Dem Tiverton. 🇪🇺🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

  7. Very very interesting that Tories are finding it so difficult to get people to stand (or even sign) in some areas. The reasoning seems to be that “talking to the Labour party is a betrayal”, but if I were a Conservative (perish the thought) I would fully understand that every possible other option has been explored and discussed to death, and that this is the only feasible next move (albeit 2 years late). Are the Tories just plain thick as two planks, or am I missing something ?

    • Kate, never forget John Stuart Mill, “Although it is not true that all Conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are Conservative.”

  8. I believe North East Derbyshire have gone from zero to 39 candidates in four years. We are already guaranteed to win six seats on Oadby & Wigston DC due to lack of opposition candidates.
