Labour only just clings on in Lambeth council by-election

Four council by-elections this week, one of which features a Liberal Democrat defence in Burnley.

Rosehill with Burnley Wood, Burrnley

A slightly complicated outcome as it is both a Liberal Democrat hold and a Lib Dem gain – the seat up for election was won by the Lib Dems last time but the councillor then left the party before then later resigning to cause this by-election. Whichever you count it as, congratulations to Peter McCann on becoming the new Liberal Democrat councillor:

Leith Walk, Edinburgh

Jack Caldwell stood for the Liberal Democrats.

Thornton, Lambeth

The second by-election in quick succession in this ward in Chuka Umunna’s constituency, showing once again Liberal Democrat progress but oh so frustratingly short of a gain from Labour:

Matthew Bryant was the Lib Dem candidate this time.

Cyfarthfa, Merthyr Tydfil

No Liberal Democrat candidate, for the fourth time in a row since 2008.

These by-election results round-ups cover principal authority by-elections. See my post The danger in celebrating parish and town council wins for your own party for the reasons to avoid straying too often into covering town, parish or community council by-elections.
