Former Labour MP arrested on suspicion of fraud

The Daily Mirror reports:

Sheffield Hallam MP Jared O’Mara has been arrested on suspicion of fraud, the Mirror understands.

Police arrested the MP a week ago, at the same time as office manager Gareth Arnold, who was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud.

Elected as a Labour MP, Jared O’Mara had previously parted ways with the party over previous controversies, including claims of sexism and homophobia, and has said he will resign as an MP in September.

Laura Gordon, the Liberal Democrat PPC for Sheffield Hallam, is already working flat out with her team in the seat. Details of how you can help her are here.

I will be back up there on October 7th. Look forward to seeing many readers there too.

UPDATE: Jared O’Mara was convicted of expenses fraud.

  1. Should this trigger a by-election. There’s something I’m sure that it’s up to the party to decide when one is called, and this would be Labour. But can anyone explain the ruling about how long before one has to be called if the party decides to dither?

  2. It leaves open the question of which party held the seat if the MP changed allegiance since elected. Also how does it work for Independent MPs.

  3. I understand that the party whose candidate held the seat normally asks Parliament for a byelection.
In this case he is an independent, so no party. Thus the Liberal Democrats or any other MP could move the writ.
