Jo Swinson will not be running for the Scottish Parliament

Jo Swinson running

Not the most surprising of news about the former Liberal Democrat leader, but worth noting given previous speculation:

There had been speculation the ex-East Dunbartonshire MP, who lost her seat in December’s general election, could make a bid to become an MSP.

But Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie said: “She’s not applied, so she’s not standing.”

He said Ms Swinson had recently announced a new job as a a visiting professor at Cranfield School of Management. [The Herald]

  1. not surprising, there’s only so many times you can be smacked in the face when you are doing your level best for the country, before having to protect your sanity by finding another role. I wish her, Duncan, and the family all the very best.

  2. I can’t help agreeing with Peter T, but I still think Jo should have put the Party first and stood for MSP. We need her energy and resourcefulness more than ever before. Time and again many people (especially women) have been “smacked in the face”, dug deep and found a way to come back – fairly quietly, showing they want to learn from past difficulties and mistakes. I hope it won’t be too long before she feels she can do that.

This is not a statement of which difficulties or mistakes were whose fault. But she knows we need her badly. (Well, she does now.)
