I know my place in the Telegraph newspaper group’s pecking order

I don’t get two undercover journalists sent to meet me. Instead, I get a phone call from a self-confessed Telegraph journalist, which puts me in my place.

But as a result I’m quoted in today’s paper:

Lib Dem activists are hoping for a series of “wins” over key policies in the New Year to provide their party with some momentum following the “neutering” of Mr Cable, whose business department lost its responsibility for media regulation in the wake of his unguarded claim he had “declared war” on Rupert Murdoch, who is bidding for complete control of BskyB.

Upcoming battles include bankers’ bonuses – on which Mr Cable wants to impose a £7.5 billion tax but is meeting resistance from George Osborne, the Chancellor – and control orders, the controversial restrictions on terrorist suspects whose cases cannot come to court – which the Lib Dems fervently want to see scrapped – as well as the by-election.

Mark Pack, co-editor of the Lib Dem Voice blog for party activists, told The Sunday Telegraph: “Imagine if at the end of next month control orders had been scrapped and there was Lib Dem MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth.

“The political landscape would look very different.”
