Lib Dems gain THREE seats from Conservatives in council by-elections

As well as the North Shropshire Parliamentary by-election, there are several council by-elections this week.

Twelve seats up for election, with seven Lib Dem candidates, down one on the last time these seats were fought.

But we can kick off those results with a Liberal Democrat gain from the Conservatives:

Congratulations Suzanne Fairless-Aitken!

Northumberland County Council goes into No Overall Control as a result.

And there’s more:

Congratulations Jaime Oliver!

And even more:

Congratulations, Sam Raby!

Thank you for standing Ian Jones, in a ward we’ve not contested before.

Thank you for standing Sarah Manuel.

No Lib Dem although there was one last time.

This ward has now been up three times and it’s never had a Lib Dem candidate.

UPDATE: There’s a correction to the vote share changes for this contest.

Thank you to Catherine Salter for standing. Until another by-election in the ward earlier this year, there hadn’t been a Lib Dem on the ballot paper in seven previous contests.

Since 2014 there have now been six contests in this ward without a Lib Dem candidate.

No Lib Dem candidate, though there was one last time around.

The last Lib Dem candidate in this ward was in 2004.

Thank you to Steve Bown on for standing.

For what this means for the running total of council by-election results since the last May elections, see my council by-elections scorecard here.

These by-election results round-ups cover principal authority by-elections. See my post The danger in celebrating parish and town council wins for your own party for the reasons to avoid straying too often into covering town, parish or community council by-elections. But these results did come to notice:

  1. The Times They are a -Changin’?
Suggest you target Countryside seats. Farmers (so many of whom put up pro-Brexit placards) are now thoroughly disenchanted, and fearful of losing their way of life altogether, through the Govt’s upcoming deal giving Australia Free Trade. Radio 4 was full of it this morning – from 5am on – and has been for seveal days – even weeks. A point stressed was ‘We will lose our typical Eng;ish landscape, which foreign tourists come to admire’.
