Pizza Express: Clerkenwell Road, Islington, London

Pizza Express manages an impressive combination with its interior decor: enough similarity for each outlet to be clearly a Pizza Express and of a certain standard and style (the grotty staircase in Islington aside), yet enough variation to avoid the sort of blight of blandness that firms such as Starbucks and McDonald’s have struggled with.

Clerkenwell Road’s Pizza Express appears, however, to be the unfortunate left-over from this policy. For its odd mix of styles – Parisan bistro, American dinner, West End bar and Langham Place airport all in one, small space – gives the impression that Clerkenwell Road is made up of the left over bits from furnishing other Pizza Expresses.

On the culinary front, however, it is better stocked than many for the lucky dip combination that is the Chocolate Glory in Clerkenwell Road contained the fullest range of ingredients spotted for a long time. I, however, decided to honour World Nutella Day slightly late:

Anyway, that’s 17 down and 111 to go (on the increasingly unlikely assumption that the total count is still accurate, but I think I’m a little way off having to worry too much about that…).
