Pizza Express: Bruton Place, London

So what to make of the Pizza Express at 23 Bruton Place, London, W1J 6ND and just round the corner from where Queen Elizabeth II was born?

Asked to be seated, if you can, on the first floor as it has many interesting old maps adorning the walls. If the first floor is out, try to go for the slightly raised area at the back as it’s much further away from the at times draughty main door into the restaurant. If, however, your dining companion has got there first and been seated in the cheap seats in the main expanse of the ground floor, don’t worry – it’s still a pretty pleasant Pizza Express as long as you don’t mind surprisingly uneven ceilings.

Full credit to the staff for tactfully and swiftly handling a drunken couple who took to throwing cutlery. Duck a few points however for not only our table not having any cutlery initially (perhaps they had sent some emergency re-supplies to Leadenhall Pizza Express?), but also on us asking for some cutlery only to be given enough cutlery for the one person. Add back a few points for comical timing from a waitress who, of course, was not quite in the league of the legendary woman from the South Bank but was one of the best for a good long while.

As for the chocolate glory lucky-dip recipe generator, here in Bruton Place it served up one mini-ice cream cone, no curled up hollow tube and no chocolate stick. Weirdly, across the two desserts there were three one-quarter slices of a strawberry. What happened to the last piece of strawberry?

Anyway, that’s 18 down and 110 to go (on the increasingly unlikely assumption that the total count is still accurate, but I think I’m a little way off having to worry too much about that…).
