Caroline Pidgeon spies some side-effects from the Olympics

London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon writes of a possible side-benefit from the London Olympics for London Loves Business:

Let’s be clear: there will obviously be delays and disruption, especially on some of the busiest days. But some perspective is also needed…

Across London there are hundreds of thousands of people who have yet to discover that it’s often possible get to work by using a different form of public transport. Many of us are surprisingly conservative in our transport habits. There are still large numbers of people living or working in London who have yet to discover the benefits of the bike hire scheme, river transport, or the new transport links opened in recent years such as the extended London Overground…

There may be severe transport problems across the capital this summer, however, the extent of the problems will depend on just how many individuals and business have made some small changes in their travel patterns.

And, most importantly, if the changes become permanent this would deliver a legacy of making London a far better place to live and work in.
