The robots are taking over… (Polish air force edition)

A sign of the future from the Polish air force as reported by israeldefense.com:

Poland’s Defense Ministry has announced plans to replace its fleet of aging Russian Sukhoi-22 combat aircraft with armed UAVs [Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, aka drones].

The complete replacement of the Polish air force’s strike capability with drones is a logical extension of the increasing popularity of the unmanned technology.

It is also a symbolic tipping point on the road to the increasing mechanisation of military capability that will both raise concerns over how well controlled the robots really are – and also at some point kick off a new round of the old debates about how important humans really are to the military (see old debates over the need for troops on the ground versus remote firepower or the need for human intelligence versus remote monitoring and interception).
