No wonder than that some Conservatives have been calling for Michael Mates to be sacked as their candidate:

Michael Mates is facing strong calls from within his own party to step down as candidate for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight over his suitability for such a sensitive job…

One critic, Graham Burges, the deputy leader of Gosport Borough Council, said: “I believe the candidate for police and crime commissioner should be beyond reproach and this candidate still has some questions to answer.

Meanwhile, David Goodall is the Liberal Democrat candidate to in the contest for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner:

The Lib Dems across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are pleased to announce they have selected a retired Hampshire Police Inspector’s son and local Councillor, David Goodall, as their candidate for the election of the Hampshire Police & Crime Commissioner.

David Goodall, 49, is also the brother of a serving Hampshire Police Inspector and does know quite a bit about a policeman’s lot; both his father and brother have served across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and had difficult incidents to deal with. David has been married to Kerstin since 1989 and they have two 15 year old sons, so he appreciates how effective policing affects the future happiness of our children.

As an Eastleigh councillor David is a member of the Community Safety Forum which works to improve relationships between the police, community groups and residents.

He is Chair of West End Parish Council which has regular briefings with the police and contributes funding to ensure that at least one Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) is on duty during the day in West End to ensure a visible police presence on the streets.

In his professional life, David is Project Manager for an international research and development company. He is experienced in managing budgets and taking critical decisions. As a technical consultant, he is also involved in a number of security related issues, including tackling the growing problem of cyber crime.

  1. I have no political affiliations whatsoever, but I'd like to see David Goodall win as he seems the right man for the job. The trouble is that, in this area – Petersfield – there's a large element who would vote for a chimpanzee if it was sporting a blue rosette.

  2. No major political party member should be the PCC. It is something all politics and law students learn early on in their courses that the enforcement arm of the UK should be independent of the political arm.
