That high tech new HMRC computer system is, er…, just Microsoft Word [photo]
It’s not that often any central government IT system, let alone one from HMRC, gets a glowing write-up in the media. Far too often it’s a case of delays and cost over-runs, so kudos to the team who have pulled off this result:
A £45MILLION super-computer has helped Revenue officials grab back an extra £2billion from tax-dodgers.
But take a close look at the photo in The Sun illustrating the story. What’s that on the computer screen?
It’s really just Microsoft Word with one word in a big font.
I do hope there’s actually rather more to this whizzy new computer system…
On a computer running XP.
Kate Bevan Double geek bonus for spotting that Kate!
Ha. Hardly geeky!
Is that the tech level of the Sun journalist, or of the istock photo archive of generic pictures…?
I rather suspect it’s an old pic.
Are you sure it’s not Powerpoint?
Martin Lunnon It looks like Word to me – e.g. the absence of the PowerPoint buttons in the bottom right (though a bit hard to see) and lack of menu down the left hand side. Also layout of menus at top looks more Word?
