Sending a criminal to prison costs more than sending a child to Eton

The Independent reports on an eye-catching statistic from Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg about the costs of sending people to prison:

Sending a criminal to prison costs more than sending a child to Eton and “we need a better return on our investment” Nick Clegg will say tomorrow.

Announcing an extra £7million of Government money to help the rehabilitation of offenders the Deputy Prime Minister will warn that successive Governments have been tough on punishing crime but weak on preventing it from happening again.

One response to “Sending a criminal to prison costs more than sending a child to Eton”

  1. The bbc series ‘the prisoners’ really shows how drugs, alcohol and mental illness drive recidivism. We could do a lot worse than to remind people of our 2011 drug policy motion’s commitment to heroin maintenance facilities for all our most vulnerable and problematic heroin users.
