Woking election result overturned after fraud investigation

An election will be re-run after widespread illegality took place:

The result of the 2012 Maybury and Sheerwater ward vote for Woking Borough Council has been thrown out by an election commissioner.

Liberal Democrat candidate Mohammed Bashir defeated his Labour counterpart Mohammad Ali by 16 votes in May last year.

But on Monday, Richard Mawrey QC ruled that corruption and illegal practices were “widespread” in the ward and there was “overwhelming” evidence that Mr Bashir and his team had been responsible.

Handing down the High Court judgment at the Woking Borough Council civic offices, Judge Mawrey decided Mr Bashir was guilty of corrupt practices including registering ‘ghost voters’. [Surrey Advertiser]
