Gambian citizens still able to vote in UK despite Commonwealth pull out

The Electoral Commission reports:

We have received several queries this week about the franchise of citizens of The Gambia following its decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth.

Qualifying Commonwealth citizens meet the nationality criterion for registering to vote at all UK elections. As the definition of ‘Commonwealth citizen’ is set out in the British Nationality Act 1981, unless legislation is passed to remove The Gambia from the list of Commonwealth countries included in the Act, qualifying citizens from The Gambia will continue to be eligible for registration.

No formal steps have yet been taken to remove The Gambia from the list of Commonwealth countries in the Act.
