Lib Dem voters keenest on driverless car; UKIP voters most hostile
There’s a classic cycle that new automated technology goes through: from suspicious through to trusted through to so mundane it’s barely thought about.
‘Fly by wire’ technology for planes is a good example – initially the cause of much cautious reporting and even scares over how pilots would no longer be able manually to fully control a plane, being left helpless if their technology failed, through now to being so unremarkable that it barely gets a mention even when there is a tragedy.
So it’s no surprise, nor any real indicator for the future, that the public currently are very cautious about driverless cars.
t’s fun though to see how that varies by party preference:
It is now possible to create driverless cars, which are driven automatically by computer. Generally speaking, do you think driverless cars are a good or bad idea?
Lib Dem – 33% say good
Conservative – 32%
Labour – 28%
UKIP – 16%
(Remember the usual caveats about margin of error, though the gap between Lib Dem and UKIP is big enough to be significant.)
