The media league table: how did the Conservative Shadow Cabinet do?

Rounding off our analysis of print media coverage gained by each of the (Shadow) Cabinet teams during their party’s autumn conference, here are the top fifteen Conservatives. As with our previous Liberal Democrat list, it’s in descending order of volume of coverage:

1. David Cameron
2. George Osborne
3. William Hague
4. Ken Clarke
5. Chris Grayling
6. Eric Pickles
7. Michael Gove
8. Liam Fox
9. David Willetts
10. Theresa May
11=. Andrew Lansley
11=. Theresa Villiers
13. Greg Clark
14=. Dominic Grieve
14=. Philip Hammond

Philip Hammond’s joint fourteenth place highlights how influence and media coverage don’t always go hand in hand, for his role in setting Conservative policy and priorities is far greater than many of those above him in the list. On the other hand, Ken Clarke’s status as one of the big beasts of the Conservative Party is reinforced by his fourth place.

The top six across all three main parties for getting coverage during their own conference were:

1. Gordon Brown
2. David Cameron
3. Peter Mandelson
4. George Osborne
5. Alistair Darling
6. Nick Clegg

His third place is an example, once again, of Peter Mandelson’s media value and influence.
