Recently I went along the Rodwell Trail between Weymouth and Portland. Like north London’s Parkland Walk, it runs along the route of an old railway line, but unlike Parkland Walk, the Rodwell Trail has been fully tarmaced.
It’s a pleasant walk with beautiful views (and, judging by the signs, a vibrant voluntary community around it), but my goodness the tarmac deadens the experience compared to Parkland Walk. Similar tarmacing of Parkland Walk has been proposed a few times in the past. Hopefully never again.
