Café with a view #13: Duck & Waffle, Heron Tower
The Duck & Waffle, open 24×7 and situated at the top of the Heron Tower need Liverpool Street station, offers amazing views out over London, including over to Alexandra Palace and beyond.
There’s a special entrance for the place – on the side of the tower facing Bishopsgate – and lifts then whizz you up the 40 floors, giving lovely views out over London as you go. If I could, I’d be tempted to spend most of the day riding up and down in the lifts.
As you might expect from the location, prices aren’t cheap so here’s my tip: just go for a coffee at the entrance bar. This gives you great views out over London and a pricey coffee is a lot cheaper than a pricey meal. The only slight flaw – the cheap seats here have windows with an ugly bar across them that is right at eye level when you are sat down. It does, however, make a great elbow rest if you walk up to the windows.
If you go for the main restaurant, book a table. Even early on a Sunday morning it’s crowded, a rare example of somewhere that breaks my London rule – the city isn’t crowded as long as you’re willing to get up before 9am on a Sunday. Watch out too that not all the tables have window views in the restaurant.
