Lib Dem party membership rises for 5th quarter in a row

For the fifth quarter in a row, the total membership of the Liberal Democrats has risen, with the party now up to 44,526. It’s notable that the boost to party membership in the immediately aftermath of a change in party finances, in order to give local parties a greater financial incentive to recruit and renew members, was not just a one-off reaction to something new but has been sustained.

The low point in membership was in the middle of 2013 at 40,530. Since then party membership has grown by 10%.*

* The party’s own email to activists talked of membership growing “at least 7%”. I’ve double-checked these figures with the party, and unless my calculator lies it is indeed a 10% growth.
