Lib Dem vote up as council by-elections recommence
It’s back to council by-elections after the general election, with five held this week.
First in: a Conservative hold with a swing to the Liberal Democrats and the party’s candidate Alec Jones:
Soham North (East Cambridgeshire) result:
CON: 59.7% (-4.3)
LDEM: 25.1% (+4.6)
LAB: 15.2% (-0.4)Conservative HOLD

But then two by-elections where the Lib Dems did not start in the top two and, as happened in the general election, the party got squeezed:
Nether Edge & Sharrow (Sheffield) result:
LAB: 45.0% (+6.8)
GRN: 42.7% (+8.4)
LDEM: 12.3% (-2.3)Labour HOLD.

Winterbourne (South Gloucestershire) result:
CON: 47.9% (+1.6)
LAB: 33.8% (+18.6)
LDEM: 18.3% (-3.8)Conservative HOLD.

But a candidate this time round in Stockton:
Yarm (Stockton on Tees) result:
CON: 50.8% (+3.9)
IND: 29.1% (-3.9)
LAB: 17.0% (-3.2)
LDEM: 3.1% (+3.1)Conservative HOLD.

Although alas not quite a full slate of candidates:
Yscir (Powys) result:
CON: 29.8%
IND (Davies): 26.0%
PC: 18.2%
GRN: 14.4%
IND (Evans): 11.2%
IND (Davies): 0.4%Con win.
