A Conservative MEP from 1979 to 1994, Bill Newton Dunn then won office again in 1999 before joining the Liberal Democrats in 2000. He twice won re-election as a Lib Dem, in 2004 and 2009. He lost his seat in 2014 but then won it back in 2019.
