And the first by-election result of the week is in from Basingstone & Deane…

An unusual Tuesday by-election kicked off a busy week for by-elections, with three more council by-elections and two Parliamentary by-elections to come. The Tuesday contest was in Basingstoke, in a ward where the Liberal Democrats have never done well but where the party did stand a candidate, hooray:

More results as they come later in the week, including the verdict in Stoke where many pro-Europeans are tempted both to vote Liberal Democrat to oppose Brexit yet also to vote Labour to block Ukip. Which of these contradictory pressures will win out?

These by-election results round-ups cover principal authority by-elections. See my post The danger in celebrating parish and town council wins for your own party for the reasons to avoid straying too often into covering town, parish or community council by-elections.
