As well as endorsing the very sensible u-turn on axing the membership incentive scheme, today’s meeting of the English Council also debated the highly controversial strategy paper. A reference back on the English Liberal Democrats’ strategy paper was defeated by 39 votes to 35, before the motion was then passed.
That such an important decision was taken by 74 votes says something about the nature of the democratic processes in the English Party, especially as there was no widespread consultation with party members over such major decisions as how to run the membership system and how to structure the party’s staffing.
With such a slim majority, however, the more controversial items do not go forth into the other decision making processes and negotiations they require with much political momentum behind them.
