Individual electoral registration: my letter to The Independent
From today’s paper:
You are right to highlight the extraordinarily long time it is taking to introduce individual electoral registration in the UK* (leading article, 3 April). However, it is a little unfair to blame the Electoral Commission for that.
They have been calling for its introduction for many years, and it was the slowness of the previous Labour government in responding that has caused the long delay, encouraged no doubt by the lack of media pressure for action either.
Now that there is both a government legislating for individual electoral registration and a media eagerly calling for it, progress is much swifter.
Yours etc.
* As pointed out, this should of course have said “Great Britain” as Northern Ireland has got there already.
It is sad that there is no mention of how there already is Individual Electoral Registration in one part of the UK – here in Northern Ireland. I believe you mean in GB.
You're right. My mistake in saying UK when I meant GB. Apologies.
Agree Mark, but Govt keeps getting sidetracked in to pointless debate about electoral system, (AV and now Lords Reform. Much rather they got on with proper reform of registration to vote, proof of ID at election and removing blanket right to postal votes and reforming, or clarigying the actual powers and processes of the second chamber.
