A graphical demonstration of just how broken our electoral system is
I’ve blogged before about how if you are under 40, nearly half the seats in the country have never changed hands since you were born. That isn’t a system that gives real power to people’s votes. Nor is it a system in which MPs are held accountable for their behaviour.
Now this great map has been put together illustrating the point:

The Labour party wasn’t founded until 1900 you imbecile.
“Labour” is used as a slight shorthand on the graphic to include those ‘Labour’ MPs who pre-dated the formal creation of the party. For example, it includes two seats first won by ‘Labour’ in 1885 – Rhondda and Normanton. Rhondda was won by William Abraham who stood as a Lib-Lab in 1885 and then subsequently as a Labour Party MP. Similarly, Normanton was won by Benjamin Pickard in 1885 as one of the other Lib-Lab MPs (there were a dozen in total) and then subsequently by other Lib-Lab and then Labour candidates.
