Jason Zadrozny charged by police

Ahead of the 2015 general election, the Liberal Democrat campaign in Ashfield fell apart after its charismatic central figure, Jason Zadrozny, was suspended following his arrest by the police.

Nearly a year on, the wheels of justice have finally ground on:

A Nottinghamshire county councillor has been charged with 10 child sex offences.

Jason Zadrozny, 35, of Sutton Road, in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, has been charged with offences ranging from rape to indecent assault.

The offences are alleged to have been committed between September 2003 and September 2006.

Mr Zadrozny, who “vehemently refutes the allegations”, is due at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on 30 March…

BBC Radio Nottingham political reporter Peter Saull said Mr Zadrozny became the youngest council leader in England in 2007.

I have no special knowledge about what the outcome of the court case may be, but whatever its outcome the amount of time the legal process is taking seems appallingly long for all concerned.

Here is the Press Release jason released today:

Commenting on being charged by Nottinghamshire Police. Ashfield Independent Councillor Jason Zadrozny said:

"Absolutely nothing has changed. I said last year that I would clear my name and nothing has changed. These charges are work of fantasy. The allegations date back over 13 years and are nonsense.

"The Police were desperate to charge me with anything after arresting me just days before the last General Election started.

"I stood as a councillor in May last year and the public saw through any allegations levelled at me by overwhelmingly voting for me.

"This is a high profile case and the Police know it. We accused the Police of corruption at the time and asked the Independent Police Complaint's Commission to investigate. This investigation is still ongoing.

"The Police knew they had to charge me with something or else they would face a serious civil action. Their desperate attempt to save face will come back to haunt them. I look forward to clearing my name. In the meantime, I will continue to represent my constituents in the conscientious manner they are accustomed to."

A Spokesperson for Jason Zadrozny said:

"We will continue to support Jason at this difficult time. The Police investigation was a disgrace. There are so many holes in their investigation, it's difficult to know where to start. Their investigation was akin to the keystone cops. They searched some premises owned by Jason and not others. They confiscated some computers that Jason had access to but not others. It is a farce and we look forward to Jason finally clearing his name.

"The Police Press Office had issued a statement about these charges before Jason had even left the Police Station. They were desperate for people to know. They were desperate to justify the way they behaved last year towards Jason."
